Flag of the Merinid dynasty
Flag of the Merinid dynasty
In 1244, the Merinid sovereigns overthrew the Almohad caliphate and controlled Morocco. They also adopt a flag that displays their victory, making sure to erase the symbols of the old dynasty. It is also the dynasty which will considerably develop science, architecture, and the arts in Morocco as evidenced by the many monuments still present today in Salé, Fez, Meknes... This flag is therefore a symbol of renewal.
During the "pacification" campaign (led by colonial France), war flags captured from Moroccan tribes were based on the Merinid emblem. Red flags with two intertwined yellow squares forming a star.
